accidental release of oil in the marine waters in history. this is video from that incident, but now there is new concern about a possible spill in the gulf. a new oil sheen was spotted last week. a sheen is a shiny coating that floats on the water's surface, and could come from leaked or spilled oil. bp says the sheen is not coming from any of its operations. the coast guard is still searching for the source. >> boy, that's the last thing those people in the gulf shore beaches want to hear right about now. some stormy weather in our area. kim is here with the very latest on the forecast. >> it's busy. and the odd thing is, there is no type of severe thunderstorm watch in effect. but we have had multiple severe thunderstorm warnings today. so i'm sure a lot of people caught a little off guard, not expecting to keep a weather eye to the sky today. and those thunderstorms are moving slowly enough and are coming down at such a heavy rate that they have led to severe thunderstorm or excuse me flash flood warnings. all right. so here's a look at the radar.
6:18 pm
let's take a look at heavy rain that has been falling. severe thunderstorm warning continues until 6:45. right here moving into the d.c. metro. those boxes that you see are actually lightning bolts. and this thunderstorm has been slowly moving. it's along 270 right now, and we have had some amazing video from there. if you remember this weekend, parts of 270 had to be shut down for a little while, because of rain covering the roads. while there's now a flash flood warning in effect for this area that goes until about 8:45. off to the east, anne arundel county, i'm happy to say, things have improved over you. and it looks like our weather is improving here. i don't know if we're running out of graphics 22 or not. but -- if you could put me over to that. okay. my bad. all right. so here's a look at what we're thinking. our weather is going to be touch and go this evening. the early evening. temperatures will be easing back down to the 70s. by 11:00, i think everything is going to be fine. in fact, you folks off to the
6:19 pm
east will be the last to wind down from the strong thunderstorms. off to the west, west of the beltway, things will wrap-up rather quickly. and by tomorrow morning, we'll just be partly cloudy and quiet. temperatures around 72 when you get up at 7:00 in the morning. here's a check at the radar. you can see the heavy rain again pushing just north of d.c. right now. this is with that warning. and the other thunderstorm warnings are north and east to up towards baltimore. so when you get in close, you can see the heavy thunderstorms here. and, again, off to the east, not much going on, other than what we're wrapping up from what we had. we had that heavy rainfall that fell across anne arundel county, that also led to a flash flood warning there, if i'm not mistaken. so we're going to continue to watch the heavy rain, as i mentioned, this evening. and this means that you should expect the weather to be touch and go, especially off to the east. all right. weather forecast for the next seven days, i hate to say, is going to be touch and go as we head into the weekend. our weekend weather is going to
6:20 pm
be 50/50. now down in woodbridge, where chief meteorologist doug kammerer is, they have thunderstorms just north of them right now. and some of the rain shield will probably wrap down across that area. it might delay the start of the game by a few minutes, but probably getting that game in. and also our team is at home tonight, the nationals. and they are going to be playing the cincinnati reds and the weather there also looks to be probably having i think a game delay at nationals park with the heavy rain across the area. so that's what we're thinking. your good night/wake-up forecast taking us into the 70s. and saturday will be the better day this weekend instead of sunday. sunday, again, we'll be having more storms firing up you as we close out the weekend. so friday and sunday are the next two days this week that we have to think about in terms of touch and go weather. and it looks like the muggy 70s are with us into the overnight, guys. we'll have complete details coming up and the rest of your

once again, we have more severe weather just into the weather office. let's take a look at the radar. severe thunderstorm warning is now in effect until 7:00. we have it for southern montgomery county, and parts of prince george's county, and southern howard county. you can see this includes all this area, the heavy radar returns and frequent lightning. so 270 is on this. if you know anybody driving home. and all around the beltway wrapping around the north side of d.c. so we'll be watching this. the main concern is the lightning and possible wind gusts to 60 miles per hour, dorene. >> thank you, kim. the fbi says it's taking a muslim extremist's threat against david letterman seriously. a private web monitoring service says it found the threat posted on a gjihadist message board tuesday, reportedly saying too to cut out his tongue.

suggesting islamic militants. >> we are about a terror squad that infiltrated into israel. this is a combined terrorist attack against israelis. >> reporter: now, violence is relatively rare in the north sinai, just on the other side of the border with israel, but it's been on the rise as of late. a number of militant cells striking a gas pipeline that runs from egypt into israel. and the israeli prime minister has warned that what he calls the post mubarak egypt is no longer in control of the sigh my desert. that has allowed militants to operate there. so what israel and egypt and the world may be witnessing now is the opening of another terror front. not on the west bank or gaza this time, but in the sinai desert. i'm jim maceda, nbc news, reporting from london. now back to you. two people are dead and forty more injured after a thunderstorm caused a stage to collapse at a rock festival in
